The Origins Project at ASU is pleased to offer up to two (2) Undergraduate Research Awards to fund joint research projects between an ASU Undergraduate and an ASU Faculty member. Each Research Award will consist of a $5,000 research fund for the student and $5,000 research fund for the faculty member, for a total of $10,000 awarded per project.

Winning proposals will feature projects related to the interests of the Origins Project, including but not limited to, research into the following focus areas:

  • the origins of the universe
  • the origins of astrophysical structures
  • the origins of life
  • the origins of complex systems
  • the origins of human evolution and culture
  • the origins of institutions
  • the origins of creative expression
  • the origins of innovative technology
  • the origins of the future

In-progress projects are permitted, provided the project will be completed no later than the end of Spring 2019. One-semester projects may be funded based upon exceptional proposals and expected project outcomes, however preference will be given to full-year projects. The award research fund will be used at the discretion of the student and faculty member.

Criteria for selection include evidence of project feasibility, intellectual impact of the project, and quality of the co-written proposal. The selection committee will include faculty from a wide array of disciplines, as well as members of the Origins Project internal and/or external advisory committees.

Proposal – each student must submit a co-written proposal narrative of no more than 1,000 words explaining the research project, the roles of the student and faculty, any expected outcomes, and how this project aligns with the interests of the Origins Project as listed above. Please note: both students and their faculty mentor/s must be signed into their ASU gmail accounts to complete the form.
